User Interface – Navigating Horror Streaming Online

User Interface

Web Experience

When you first open Shudder, it might remind you of Netflix because it shares a similar color scheme, layout, and tabs. Shudder uses black, white, and red colors, which are easy on the eyes.

The navigation comprises these four menu items: Collections, Movies, Series, and Shudder TV. You can organize a collection of movies and shows you love to watch in the My List section. To do this, hover over the movie title and click the My List Button.

The search button is more effective when you search for more specific titles. It doesn’t let you search for a movie by other parameters such as director, description, or subgenre. The My Account area only performs basic functions like editing your email address, creating a display name, resetting your password, and updating billing information.

You’ll likely notice some nice interface effects while using the platform. One is the back-and-forth shaking of the menu items when you hover over them. When you want to play content without signing in, a message says, “It seems you’re not one of us…yet.” Which is terrifyingly cool.

The Homepage

On the homepage, there is a large horizontal gallery that shows featured content. In the collection section, movies and shows can be organized across broader categories. The categories are Borderlands, Horror 101, Subgenres, and Guest Spotlights.

In the movie section, a useful selection tool breaks down movie titles by genre, making it easier to find movies. Some genres in the movie section include Cult, Paranormal, Revenge, Sci-fi, Supernatural, and Psychological thriller.

Mobile Experience on Shudder

You can access Shudder through the mobile app available on the Android Play Store and iOS Store. On the mobile app, you cannot edit any information in the account section; you can only view your username and email account.

It uses the same color theme as the web interface and has four navigation icons at the bottom of the screen. The navigation icons are Featured, Shudder TV, Collections, and Browse. Unlike the web interface, The My List section is hidden under the Featured section. The search bar appears at the top right side of the interface, and it works the same way as the web’s search feature.

Playback Performance

A lot of the content on Shudder can be watched in high quality, like 1080p, but some of the really old stuff isn’t in high resolution, which is understandable because those movies are just old. However, a few things are lower quality at 480p, which isn’t great. All of Shudder’s original series can be them in 720p. Some other on-demand video streaming services usually allow users to stream movies in 1080p. Some streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video allow streaming up to 4k resolution

The users are thankful for the absence of ads, making the experience worthwhile. For a good streaming experience on Shudder, an internet connection speed of about 6mbps is required. The playback interface has the usual playback and volume experience typical of other streaming platforms. It has a 10-second rewind button and a progress bar for playback but lacks a fast-forward button.

There is no parental control feature on Shudder. There are indeed some movies on Shudder that are not very violent or too scary, suitable for kids. However, there’s no way to control or filter them for children on the platform.

Customer Support

Shudder has a 24/7 customer support system, but it might take time to respond to you if so many requests exist. Shudder is like one of those streaming services that won’t let you in if you’re in a location where it’s not available. For this reason, we tried using a reliable VPN connected to the U.S.-based server. Therefore, it’s safe to say that Shudder works fine with a VPN.
